Compute a new variable

Create or overwrite a numeric column from an expression, like SPSS Transform → Compute Variable.

How to

  1. 1On the Data tab, click Compute.
  2. 2Type the new column name into Target variable (for example SAT_mean).
  3. 3Build the Numeric expression: double-click a variable or function, or type, e.g. MEAN(SAT1, SAT2, SAT3).
  4. 4Click OK. The new column appears in the grid.

Good to know

  • Functions include ABS, EXP, LN, LOG, MOD, POW, RND, SQRT, MEAN, SUM, MIN, MAX, ZSCORE and STANDARDIZE.
